HARDwifey//phoneCORE is me taking a more hard-dance and nightcore approach to my usual phonewifey process of beat making and song writing. I’ve definitely incorporated club influences into my music before: 2021’s HARD YEAR is very influenced by trance, hardstyle and techno, but with this record I wanted to sink more into the realm of nightcore, hard house and happy hardcore.
It’s a bit weird releasing a cover of Auld Lang Syne right in the middle of the year, but the 190bpm remix of my own cover was the first track I worked on for this EP that really seemed to capture the mood of what I was going for. Round and Around is a trancy hard house track inspired by the Classic Euphoria and Clubland mix CD’s that put me onto dance music in my early teens. WHEELS CAME OFF//FLOOR CAVED IN is a song in two halves: first is a melodic internet rap section with a prominent guitar hook that’s more in keeping with the early phonewifey sound, which then gives way to a high octane happy hardcore reimagining of its first half, complete with pitched up vocals and incessant 4-to-the-floor kick drums. And almost the reverse of that structure is d o n t s t o p featuring lightningboy, which begins with a super fast, nightcore inspired club banger and ends with a more subdued back and forth cloudrap cypher.
Thanks to N4TS for offering me the platform to explore some of these influences in a new EP
